The shade is made of mica which is a mineral, a crystallin structure like a rock really that has been sliced in thin layers which allows the translucency of light to pass through. Mica can withstand tremendous heat and was originally used for oven doors to see the fire burning. During the early 1900s, mica was a key element used by Dirk Van Erp who designed the iconic mission style mica and copper table lamps during the Arts and Crafts period.
