Congo Kuba Textile in Plexiglass Box Frame

Vintage Kuba Textile from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire, are uniquely different for the complexity of design. this variation is rectangular and exemplifies the artistic geometric variation.

The King commissioned many pieces to announce his wealth and status. If the pieces were not worn they were hung behind the King’s throne area. In the Kuba court, the men are typically responsible for the raffia palm cultivation and the weaving of the raffia cloth. Women then take the cloth and apply the surface decoration creating patterns of creativity.

At this point it’s impossible to accurately date the cloths. This one can be hung vertically or horizontally.
