What Should I Do With My Old Furniture

Decorating & Interior Design

1 Jul

When you buy new furniture you might ask what can be done with existing furniture that is gently used that needs to be removed from your home.  This is a fantastic question and I’ve highlighted some thoughts and resources below.

You may have already experienced this.  Here’s a true story about one client’s experience when calling in to ask what to do with their existing furniture to make room for the new furniture.  It so affected me that I could not forget about it and felt compelled to find a solution.tuscan living room chair

Gerald’s Story

Gerald had an issue he wanted to make me aware of.  His family had spent a lot of money with us and was very, very, very disappointed when he called one day and his question was not addressed.

Gerald was requesting guidance on selling some furniture out of one of his homes.  He knew the traditional route but didn’t want to donate it to a Big Box Charity.  The person he spoke with at our Dallas showroom only offered negative responses. Gerald asked for a callback but was not optimistic of that happening given his experience over the phone with that person. Inside, it rankled him that this amazing place where he loves to shop didn’t help him.  And FYI, he never got a call back.

Gerald called me.  Sometimes, it’s more than just apologizing for the poor performance or behaviors of a company.  I sincerely apologized but I am a results oriented person—show me the bacon.  Since then, I have researched many options on recycling furniture and am open to more if you have any suggestions.

When we are asked what can be done with existing furnishings that needs to be removed from a home, we do have recommendations of where they can go to for help.

Top Four Choices!

#1 :  Give to family members or friends.  Pass the blessing forward, help someone out.

#2 :  Consign it — to a shop.  Each shop has it’s own rules and contracts to determine if they are taking your furniture and they determine the selling cost.

#3:   Sell on line — maybe in the local neighborhood Facebook page

#4:   Donate — to the Furniture Bank of Houston/Dallas or Dwell with Dignity in Dallas

Landfill is not an option.

Below are some consignment shops that I called to verify the procedures.  Online selling of your furniture is mostly neighborhood Facebook oriented, where you know the folks coming around to look at your furniture.  The third option is donation and we support the Houston furniture bank as well as Dwell with dignity.
